It participates in the investigation, discussion and drafting of relevant government documents, and undertakes major research projects designated by the State Council.

The Department conducts research on major issues entrusted by the government ministries and commissions. The Department has undertaken research projects for the Ministry of Commerce, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and China Insurance Regulatory Commission on various major subjects. Many of its policy recommendations have been adopted by the government decision makers.
