Once thought of as inedible, demand for kale now makes it highly sought after. Gaomi county in Shandong province began cultivating kale in 2005. After years of trial and error, farmers succeeded in cultivating it by 2012. For years, it was only sold as an export to the US. That all changed in 2024 when domestic companies suddenly became interested. Now, that output has doubled.
